WILD Researchers Night

Manchester Museum, 25 September 2024

Moss may not instantly say WILD to you: after all, we see it most often in everyday places – in gardens, on walls, in the cracks in the pavement. Some of us might see it mainly as a slip hazard or even as an unsightly nuisance. But did you know that Manchester is built on moss, and that moss may be one of the answers to our big global problems? Though small and unobtrusive, mosses are mighty! One of the earliest land plants, they are crucial to many kinds of habitat. Their complex structures retain and purify water; they can help to heal land damaged by fire or other disasters. Peat bogs, among our most important carbon sinks, are made up largely of decomposed moss. From the UK’s wetlands to its busy city streets, mosses support worlds of wildness both large and small. Join us for a closer look at some of the marvellous properties of Manchester’s mosses!
